Systemtype is a research project focused on the automation of type design, variability, and readability. For this, a type system was developed based on a simple foundational grid, a limited number of modules, and their variability. In the 12-point grid, all letters of the system are constructed from 4 modules. Within the same grid, 5 type skeletons are created. These modules are then varied, so that within the same type system, countless new fonts can be generated. From this spectrum of fonts, 5 were selected, and the variation of the modules was adjusted to ensure they are interpolable, allowing for variable movement within the individual families.
To give the user the opportunity to explore the type system in full, a type tester was coded, allowing for free experimentation. In this tester, users can explore the entire type system across all its families, with all the different constructs and modules.
